flashback friday: our engagement story

Other than a few scrapbooks buried in the back of the closet in the spare bedroom, I never took the time to really record the moments in our life. I only have memories stored in my head & pictures scattered all over the place-in clear bins & in old brown moving boxes, pictures on facebook, disorganized folders of pictures on my computer, & pictures still on SD cards. So I thought it would be fun & special to do a Flashback Friday once in a while. A great way to relive special moments from our life & have them organized at the same time!

 *****
I can’t believe it has been six years since we got engaged! I had to count out the years in my head like three times because I was that shocked at how fast time really does go by!

I met Josh in 2005. Every few weeks I would get my nails done by Bree down at the salon near my house. She knew about my recent breakup & told me about Josh-he was single, had a good job, good looking-she gave me his number & told me to give him a call. When I called the next night I left a voice mail & he called back a few hours later when he got home from the gym. I remember sitting outside in the driveway at my parents' house on a warm, early summer evening talking on the phone with him for over an hour. Before hanging up we decided to meet at the bar where I went country line dancing-it was a fun place & the atmosphere was awesome-definitely a great spot for a blind date!

I was so nervous before he got there that night that I guzzled down a corona while waiting for him-I'm not a big drinker so I was definitely feeling more relaxed! We ended up having the best night! We hit it off right away & didn't stop talking until the bar was closing. Our conversations flowed, nothing was forced, & it all felt so natural.

We dated for a while but then broke up. A few months later I was surprised to see a letter in the mail from him. His letter was really sweet & he poured his heart out about how miserable he was without me. That weekend we met up for coffee & dessert & soon enough we became pretty serious about each other.

Months later, we rented a house together & eventually we I started talking about getting married & having a family. I was in way more of a rush than he was- I wanted to get engaged, married, & start a family right that very second. He, on the other hand, took proposing very seriously & waited until the perfect moment.

Christmas morning of 2006 we were opening gifts in our living room & as I unwrapped a little black box with a ring in it the thought that he was about to propose flashed through my head. He crushed that thought very quickly when he explained it wasn’t an engagement ring & that it was a promise ring & he promised that we would be engaged soon.

Here I was, a 24 year old girl who knew exactly what she wanted & let me tell you it wasn’t a promise ring that I wanted- I wanted to be engaged! I’m not gonna lie, I was pissed off! I definitely acted a little very immature over this & let my emotions take over, but all my friends were getting married & having babies & I knew I wanted that too.

February 28, 2007, just two months after he gave me that promise ring, we hopped on an airplane & headed to Florida for our first trip together. We were so in love & so incredibly excited about this trip. We stayed at Portofino Bay the first night & this place is absolutely gorgeous-from the cobblestone streets to the sidewalk cafĂ©’s to the little shops filled with beautiful paintings. It was like a little taste of Italy (but in Florida).

After we checked in & walked around the resort we decided to go take a nap in our room because I had a headache & because Josh just likes to take naps. Thankfully when we woke up I was feeling much better so we headed outside to eat dinner at Mama Della’s Ristorante overlooking the Harbor Piazza- Italian music played, the aroma of Italian food filled the air, the sun was setting behind us, & we had great conversations.

After dinner we took a walk along the cobblestone streets. A few minutes into our walk we stopped to sit on a bench overlooking the water & he started talking about how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I remember thinking how weird it was that he was talking like this & I remember thinking holy crap is he going to propose??! I don’t remember exactly what he said but the next thing I knew he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! I was so shocked; I couldn’t believe it was really happening. And in Florida! I said yes as I wiped a few tears from my eyes & we hugged & kissed & called our family & closest friends to tell them the news.

this picture was taken right after we got engaged & we always laugh at this & make fun of how big my smile was here & how happy I look. this picture says it all really.
Looking back, I'm so glad that he didn’t propose that Christmas morning & waited to do it in Florida. He knew how much I loved Florida & it was meaningful & romantic & magical & better than I ever thought it could be & we still had a whole week to look forward to together on our vacation.

This was the beginning of our little life together.

A few pictures from that week-
